Rudd on the fly....
Following the first decent rudd/hybrid of the season I had a think about how I could challenge myself to pick out the bigger fish by other methods, having done a little bit of fluff chucking in the past (with very limited success) I though it would be worth a punt at seeing if I could get the rudd to rise to dry flies.Trying a variety of dry flies in varying hook sizes i was getting the fish to rise but they turned away at the last minute before the take, whether this was because of the line on the water or my choice of fly was totally in appropriate for what had hatched that day I wasn't sure. Switching over to a simple white nymph with a red head that I allowed to sink slowly via the shortish hook length whilst still fishing a floating line made the difference. A fly a couple of inches under the surface received instant attraction. Casting to the edge of an emerging lily bed the nymph diapered beyond sight as the line straightened and I lifted the rod into a lovely rudd, not as big as the one on bread crust a few days previously but this fish was 100% all rudd, its bronze flanks and vivid red fins were unmistakeable with its pronounced bottom lip.
