Rudd off the surface...Summer 2015 is here!!
With temperatures increasing and the rivers frustratingly closed I have taken the opportunity to target a small Lincolnshire pond in my lunch hour. The stand out species in this water are the rudd, that I estimate could possibly touch the 2lb mark. With a big head of these surface feeding red fins the challenge is often picking your way through the smaller fish to have any chance of a decent fish even seeing a bait. I have found that a simply fishing a bigger piece of bread crust (£2 coin size) means the smaller fish can not bring the bait under the surface whilst their commotion often allows the bigger fish to identity the bait and give them a look in at taking it.Fist mini-session of the year I found some good fish around the back of the island and after a couple of chucks managed to tempt a bigger fish to take the bread crust, a lovely rudd was soon banked though I doubt its true genetics and think there is a good chance the bigger fish are hybrids. If you look at the colouration of the tail and the silvery appearance of its flanks there is defiantly some roach in there somewhere. But hey ho still a lovely fish and taken off this surface, for me this marks that summer is here!!
