The Elusive Esox Lucius
Having bought a ticket on a trout reservoir in December for the back end of the season, i ventured down to the water at the beginning of January to see if i could tempt one of the big girls that its home to.
With this being the first pike syndicate ticket available on the water, expectations were high but so far the pike seem to be staying very elusive with only one reported fish caught since November.
Setting up on a point where there were 3 Grebe's diving repeatedly, i hoped i had set up in front of a shoal of bait fish that the pike shouldn't have been far behind. Being on the point i also intended to target fish patrolling the shelf and moving into a bay where bait fish have been seen previously.
Unfortunately through the day the only action i received was the swinger slamming against the underside of the spool as i received liners from trout. Injecting baits, tweaking baits, leapfrogging rods, altering casting distances were all varied and the swim was fully covered. a tough day but a lesson that the pike are not where i thought they would be. Deeper water on the next session!
