After another couple of blanks on both the tidal and the non tidal stretches of the Trent i headed over to the Newark Dyke on the 10th of September to see if i could pick out a few barbel from under the numerous snags on the stretch. I landed in a swim i know well and one which a friend had fished in the week before. Fishing tight under a fallen branch on a clear patch of gravel with a thick patch of weed running down one side i hand fed balls of crushed pellet based ground bait and Teme Severn ellipse pellets. Using a simple 4oz gripper lead free running with a size 10 Drennan Super Specialist hook in conjunction with 2x ellipse pellets, i soon started recieving plucks on the rod tip and it soon hooped over and i was into a hard fighting fish. A typical hook and hold fight to aviod the large snag i soon had the fish under control and in the net at 8lb 7oz. I only picked up 2 smaller barbel in the afternoon and waited until dusk to see if they came back on the feed but it never came. I still went home happy finally getting amongst the barbel again.
