First Session Of The 12/13 Season...

I started the 12/13 season on the Collingham AA stretch of the Tidal Trent. Hearing rumours of people being camped out waiting to fish the weir field since monday it was quite a shock to find only 3 other people fishing when I arrived. With the water heavily coloured and high I set up by the weir. Witnessing a huge tree come over the weir soon after casting in, it was clear that quite a lot of rubbish and weed would be coming through. Initially setting up 5oz feeders these were soon bulked up with an extra 3oz lead (which was still rolling only casting 20 meters out). Constantly re-casting to attempt to lay a bed of bait down (which was probably baiting up 10 pegs downstream) it was hard work to get a take, though at 1:43am the alarm screamed off and I landed my first fish of the season at 7lb 6oz on a Teme Severn lamprey boilie. Accompanied the following day with a good friend Ash, we soon found the fish feeding early evening. Taking the majority of the fish on single Teme Severn lamprey boilie glugged in Teme Severn barbel pro to enhance the bait further, they fed for a short period intensively from 8pm before switching off at 11pm.

The following day we had some early takes landing several barbel through no real standout fish. With the river levels dropping by the hour we soon had enough dry ground to move up closer to the weir and cast into the more turbulent water where 5oz was now holding comfortably. Taking advantage of being able to feed up a swim accurately with a feeder mix and cubes of meat you will see me crouched on the wall to the right hand side.

Using  3cm x 3cm x 3cm cubes of luncheon meat in conjunction with size 10 hooks and lamprey boilies fished with size 12's we soon found we were picking out the bigger fish with Ash landing barbel at 10lb 4oz and 9lb 15oz.

I managed to land a fish up to 9lb 6oz along with 2 other 9lb fish and plenty of fish between 7lb and 8lb.

However like the previous evening the fish soon switched off feeding with the decreasing light levels. The following morning Ash left to go to work however I continued to fish into the weir. The morning brought no success though the fish started to feed again in the afternoon and I managed to land several fish the biggest 9lb 0oz.

Overall a very good start to the season and I can’t wait to get back on the bank for the next session.
