Ambergris Baits Produces The Goods Again...A Breeze Block Impersonating Barbel!
I ventured onto a stretch of the Tidal Trent i hadn't fished before this evening, aiming to get away from the hustle and bustle (or radio's, people's inability to use bite alarms and general idiots who don't have a clue about fish care etc..to be precise).Loading up the barrow i set off on a bit of hike and arriving at the stretch there was only one other angler on the bank. With the heavy rain on Friday night the river was slight coloured but according to the EA website hadn't risen at all (which i found very surprising). Having never seen the stretch before the first thing i did was to have a lead around and determine where the gravel runs, snags, weed etc....were. Once i had chosen a line and distance i wanted to fish i clipped up and layed a bed of bait down consisting of hemp, breadcrumb, crushed pellets and CSL. Casting onto the clip on both rods I then sat back whilst a couple of hours passed.
Having received no indications of fish in the swim i had to make decision of whether to stay in the swim and re-bait or move to another swim. I decided on the fist option and cast in around 3kg of a sloppier mix that i mentioned previously. Casting both rods back out on Ambergris Baits Minke Boilies glugged in salmon oil and further wrapped in matching paste. Within 5 minutes of the rods being back on the tripod (which was firmly pegged down following the previous sessions drama) the down stream rod slammed over (and i mean slammed over) and i picked up into a fish that was stripping line for fun. Hugging the bottom deep i could feel snag after snag and twice the weight went solid. Opening the bale arm and then regaining pressure the fish managed to free itself from the snag. On several occasions it made several good impersonations of a breeze block! Finally landing the fish i rested her in the net before unhooking her and taking a few photographs.
On returning her i made sure she was fully recovered before she was released, this took about 15 minutes before she was strong enough to kick free. Interestingly this area of the Tidal is hardly fished and from the account that fish gave of itself the fish fight much harder as they have not been caught before or as often as fish in more popular stretch's. Casting both rods back out again there was interest straight away and i hooked into 3 more fish but they sure had the better of me, with all 3 finding the same snag. I guess you learn from your experiences and on a new stretch I am yet to fully understand where the underwater contours and features.
As for Ambergris Baits they keep producing the goods and its very clear the barbel love them! No matter what combination i tried they produced interest, i had takes on: 14mm glugged Minke with paste, 14mm Minke with no paste and 14mm Minke with Moby paste. Having achieved what i wanted from the session i called in a night at 9-30pm and i will sure be returning soon onto this stretch as i am sure its holds some very big girls.
