First Session of 2013 and a new PB...

With temperatures increasing over night, heavy rain had melted the majority of the standing snow; the only concern I had was the melt water making its natural course into the lake. Setting up around 8:30am in a sheltered bay, we spread the baits out at various distances to cover the widest area. The main feature of the swim was an inlet pipe linking a small river. The first indication I received of the fish becoming active was whilst retrieving a legered sardine, however the fish shook the hooks after an eregeric burst. Quickly removing the 2oz lead on a running snap link, I wobbled a sardine through the same area which was immediately followed and nailed by a small but chunky female fish of 10lb 0oz.

I continued to wobble sardines through the same area for the next 20 minutes receiving numerous takes and dropped runs, resulting in me landing 3 small but very clean and healthy pike. This feeding spell soon slowed and I returned to simple float legered and legered set up. Aiming to draw pike to the bait I injected 5ml of herring oil into the flesh of the sardines. Spreading the rods out again I left the baits for a good 2 hours before I received my next take. The large 20g bob float that was 20/25 meters out started to move away slowly which I initially thought was wind drag, however when the alarm started to sound it was a clear indication that a fish was moving away with the bait. Lifting the rod and striking to set the hooks I felt the weight of the fish as it ran to the left. She was soon gracing the net after a powerful fight. Resting the fish before carefully placing her on the mat for weighing and photographing I soon realised that I may have banked a new PB and indeed I had at 25lb 0oz. Returning her to the water she kicked away to the depths and with the possibility that next time she is caught she maybe 30lb+.
